Abstract

Pakistan having the largest irrigation system still dependent on other countries to meet its demand for food security mainly for the crop of wheat and fertilizers. This situation is growing day by day and now Pakistan has become one of the largest importers in the world. This study reveals the causes and reasons behind this grim situation which highlighted the issues of old and outdated constructed water channels, less technological and innovative techniques introduced in the agriculture sector with unequal distribution of natural resources. But countering these difficulties, this review suggests some measures to uplift the agriculture sector while minimizing the dependency on imports of Pakistan including a proper surveillance system for vulnerable land due to climate change, construction of dams for proper storage of water, and proper political will to implement the better policies regarding the improvement of the agriculture sector.
